With ever expanding titles, the “She Persisted” chapter book series will likely include a biography of someone that every student should be able to relate to. Patsy Mink’s struggles to get accepted into schools, Marion Anderson’s quest to help her family financially, and Oprah Winfrey’s entrepreneurial spirit, all describe women who worked hard to achieve success in a society that often devalued their talents and work ethic. This session includes classroom ready lessons based on specific titles as well as activities that could be used in a class biography unit. It is to be noted that most of the women featured in this series were born into poverty, dealt with discrimination, and valued education.
