This webinar will build on the work and thinking of Dr. LaGarrett King’s article, “Black History is Not American History: Toward a framework of Black Historical Consciousness. During the webinar participants will engage in discourse around the idea that Black history is Not American history and develop a better understanding of why Dr. King and others who have taken this position. During the webinar we will critically think about what is Black Historical Consciousness and why it is and is not included in the status quo versions of Black History. Participants will learn of the 6 elements needed (according to Dr. King) to engage students in critical learning experiences of Black History using Black Historical Consciousness Principals. The major takeaways from this webinar are to get participants to think deeper and reflect on what is thought to be Black History as well as the ways in which it is taught to students, and the role Black History plays within the school system.
